The use of catastrophic sick leave -- intended for use by people with life-threatening illness -- has come under scrutiny since it was revealed that an aide to Mayor Gavin Newsom, with whom the mayor had a sexual affair, used it for substance abuse treatment… The leave is usually taken by people with cancer, AIDS or other life threatening illnesses. Ruby Rippey-Tourk, the mayor's aide with whom he had an affair, was apparently the first person to ever be granted the leave for substance abuse treatment. Other city employees who requested catastrophic leave for that reason had been denied.
