After Gavin Newsom was elected lieutenant governor, he repeatedly made clear his frustration with the job and its lack of responsibilities. The official portfolio for the office is thin, including sitting on boards that oversee the state's higher education system and public lands, leading an economic council and serving as acting governor when California's chief executive is out of state or otherwise unavailable... Newsom's responsibilities as lieutenant governor are much more limited in scope, a point he has frequently drawn attention to. Before he ran for lieutenant governor in 2010, he derided the role as having "no real authority and no real portfolio."... Two years into the job, during a break in filming his Current TV show, Newsom was asked by friend and hotelier Chip Conley how frequently he went to Sacramento. "Like one day a week, tops," Newsom said. "There's no reason.… It's just so dull.

Gubernatorial candidates Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa were in positions of power when they had extramarital affairs as mayors of, respectively, San Francisco and Los Angeles. In Newsom's case, he confessed to an affair with a woman who worked for him; Villaraigosa had a relationship with a Telemundo reporter. We should expect powerful leaders not to take advantage of their positions of power as Villaraigosa and Newsom did.

The most dramatic news in the year’s first big round of political polling, out a few days ago, was that Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, once the prohibitive leader in the run for governor, has fallen into a virtual tie for first place with former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in the seven-candidate field of significant candidates... That’s somewhat ironic in this year of #MeToo revelations of sexual harassment in politics and business, since both ex-mayors have had well-publicized sexual incidents that both say they now deeply regret.

But heightened scrutiny of powerful men's behavior has led to a new focus on Newsom and Villaraigosa's relationships while in office, and questions about whether the affairs will affect their chances of being elected California's next governor. Former Rep. Ellen Tauscher, a confidante of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, said it depends on whether voters believe Newsom and Villaraigosa have learned from experience and changed… "We're talking about one-offs, but when it starts to look like it's a pattern, that's not a mistake," she added. "It's wrong and it's behavior." Christine Pelosi, the chair of the California Democratic Party's Women's Caucus, said anyone running for governor of California should expect intense scrutiny of their sexual indiscretions.
